Shabo is a village in Belgorod-Dnestrovsky district, the wine capital of Bessarabia

Sandy shores of the Dniester estuary, mild climate, healing air, filled with fresh fruit aromas and energy of the sun, are all Shabo, the pearl of the Black Sea coast.

Shabo has long been considered a unique wine-growing zone. Vineyards are located on the so-called "grape latitude", i.e. at the same latitude as the great wine regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. In different countries of the world at this breadth the winemakers create the Great Wines

The local expanse has always attracted winemakers. The first 500 years ago Turkish-Tatar nomads came here. They correctly noticed that these lands are ideal for cultivating grapes. The French from the canton of Waugh knew about this mysterious peculiarity of "grape breadth" and had long been looking for a fertile land for cultivating grapes, looking for their "grape Klondike." That is why in the early 19th century, led by botanist Louis Tardan, they arrived in Shabo. This place they recognized as ideal for the creation of their Great Wine.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Emperor Alexander 1 signed a decree establishing the settlement of French settlers. The settlement was organized with the assistance of the mentor of the Emperor - Frederick Caesar de la Garpa, a native of the canton of Vaud.

The first 15 families of French wine-growers from the Canton of Vaud arrived in the autumn of 1822. The eldest among them was Louis-Vincent Tardan with four sons. Louis Vincenn himself, in search of fertile land suitable for viticulture, came to Shabo a year earlier.

The new land was liked by the settlers. "If you want to see heaven on earth," Louis Tardan wrote, "you will not find a better place." The Tardan urged the settlers "to hasten to the fertile lands of Shabo, where the vines, peaches, mulberry ripen both early and with great success."

The place of the settlement of the French wine-growers was called "Asha-abag" (Acha-abag) in Turkish, which means "Lower Gardens" (the "orchards" at the time were called vineyards, and the "lower" were named because they were located below Akkerman).

The French retained the name of the village, but because of the difficulty of pronunciation, they gradually transformed it into "Shabag" (Schabag), and then finally "Frenchized", renaming Shabo.

Gradually the whole coastal strip of the Dniester Estuary turned into a grape massif. Shabian vineyards were the best in Novorossiysk province.

The official birthday of the French settlement Shabo is November 10, 1822. However, as the wine growing region of Shabo appeared much earlier: the earliest evidence of the existence of Shabo was recorded in the form of "asha-abag" in the cartographic source of 1788. It is this date that historians recognize the year of Shabo's foundation.


SHABO - 217 years old

October 14, 2006, on the Feast of the Intercession of the Mother of God, along the streets of the village of Shabo, the smart villagers hurriedly gathered in the main square near the village council. There, in the morning, preparations were made for the celebration of the village day, which was decided to coincide with a particularly revered Christian holiday.

"Dear Shabbans!" - the host of the festive program, director of the House of Culture Igor Paradenko, greeted the opening of the solemn part of the Shabo Day, and gave the floor to the village head Igor Kvashnin. In the congratulation of the head, the words were voiced about the growth of the well-being of the villagers, the wishes of health and new achievements.

I came to congratulate people with a double holiday and the rector of the local church. From the mouth of his father Nicholas sounded the story of the appearance of the holiday of the Intercession. He also told that in Shabo once there was also the Church of the Intercession, but it was destroyed in the Soviet times. The last icon was carried away by people and preserved as a shrine. Now this icon is in the St. Nicholas Church and weeps with bloody tears. There is no such miracle for many thousands of kilometers, maybe the village of Shabo is also marked by the grace of God?

And yet people of this village rely, first of all, on their own strengths. Probably, that's why there is also a wonderful chapel "Spivucha groone" under the direction of Tatyana and Nikolay Borovsky. She decorated her performance with a performance, having performed several songs, one of them was called "My village". And the number of certificates and gifts that were presented to workers and well-deserved citizens of the village also speaks of its enormous potential. As they say, there is something to keep, there is someone to respect, then - there is tomorrow.

It is difficult to list all the numerous guests of the holiday, but those who prepared it deserve the words of gratitude. Great help was provided by SC Shabolat, agrofirma Shabo, OJSC Metallist and many others. The regional department of culture in honor of the holiday handed the House of Culture of Shabo new equipment, the Head of the Department Dora Korchagina told how long the workers of the Palace of Culture, and all the residents, dreamed of such a gift. And the director of Shabskoye secondary school # 1 Vladimir Fedenko and the director of the Folk History and Local History Museum Shabo Lyudmila Chekmareva were invited to visit this museum, telling about the history of the village and the region.

After honoring the players who won first place in the regional championship, the host invited to the microphone of the world and European champion in powerlifting. This athlete is the pride of the village. Gennady Shevchenko, coach and master of sports in Greco-Roman wrestling, gave a short greeting. The best certificates on agrofirm "Shabo" were given to the head Ivan Bratinov, since all the workers are now in the field.

As is, after all the celebrations, the festival continued the concert program. All decoration by own hands was prepared by art director Nadezhda Chernenko. Natalia Pushkina, the soloist of the ensemble "Tire", raised her mood with songs, the children's dance ensemble "Rainbow" presented Ukrainian, Gypsy, Oriental and modern dances to the audience, supported the tone of the holiday with cheerful songs Alexander Medvedev, Natalya Temnohud, the Shabian star, "Misse-beauty of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky district "Yulia Shpalarenko.

Music design was provided by Igor Paradenko, Pavel Chernenko and Anatoly Balzhik. During the concert in the middle of the square there were also sports competitions. Winners were waited with notable prizes: wine and live cocks. In the struggle, tried not only the forces of the guys, but also the girls. As a result, the winner of this competition, Alexey carried home a living prize.

In the tug of war, all wishing competed, their heroic power was shown by men with weight, and on stage at that time the guests from the regional organization "Prosvita" solemnly handed over to the local museum the bust of Lesia Ukrainka. The young museologists of the village told the story of the life of the poetess, thanked the guests for the gift.

Again, a song poured over the Shabian fields. The fair was already finished with refreshments and tasting, the ear was welded in the field kitchen of part A1319, children were riding on the bricks, and the holiday was still rustling! ..

Shabo always attracted travelers

Pushkin came here. In the memoirs of Major IP Liprandi we find the following lines:

Shabo forever conquered the heart of Louis Vincent Tardan. The hobby of winemaking was shared by his sons.

At the first agricultural exhibition in Chisinau in 1847. Karl Tardan introduced eight varieties of wine in 1845 and 1846: six - dining rooms, one - dessert and one - effervescent. They were recognized as the best and awarded gold medals. The wines of Karl Tardan were awarded with medals at exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kherson.

In the 1860-1870gg. The tsarist government gave part of the Shabo lands to the German Swiss. French Swiss were Reformed, German - Lutherans. On 1000 hectares of its own vineyards, located between the Dniester estuary and the Black Sea coast, in Shabo ripen magnificent bunches of the best varieties of grapes, many of which were imported 200 years ago by the first French settlers.

In 2002 a Licensing Agreement was signed giving the right to Starokazatsky Winery to pour out the elite wine materials of the Shabo Agrofirm at the production facilities of the plant. - Vazha Georgievich, can Ukraine be called a winemaking power?
- Probably not yet. I was born and raised in Georgia. No one will argue that Georgia is a winemaking power. Between the words "wine" and "Georgia" is a direct associative link. This can not be said about Ukraine. But here there is a huge potential, ancient roots. It's time to brand Ukraine as a winemaking power. The opinion is becoming increasingly clear in the eyes of consumers that there are already manufacturers in Ukraine who can create high-quality wines. I am convinced that today "Winery Shabo" - among such producers.

- On what grounds do you rank the "Shabo Company" among the best Ukrainian producers?
- Based on several reasons. The Shab region has an ancient history of winemaking. As you know, the famous Shabian settlement was founded by French-Swiss immigrants about 200 years ago. Since then, Shabo is the pearl of Ukrainian winemaking. There is everything you need for this industry: unique sandy loam soils, fertile climate, proximity of the Black Sea and Dniester estuary.

We managed to preserve the ancient traditions of winemaking and bring modern technological developments. For example, such as carbon dioxide maceration, cryomacation, stopping the fermentation process with cold and, of course, the technology of cold bottling.

The best domestic and foreign experts are involved in researching the conditions that will allow us to create wines of exceptional quality in this region in the near future. I'm not afraid to say - Great Wines.

From this point of view, "Shabo" is, of course, not a brand invented by marketers, but a real brand whose roots are in the history of two hundred years ago.

- From your point of view, which link in the technological process of creating a quality wine is the most important?
- Each link in this chain is the main thing. At every stage of the wine making process, strict compliance with technological conditions is necessary.
It all begins with the selection and processing of soils, then - the selection of planting material, the cultivation of the vine, the collection of grapes, then - the creation and aging of wine materials and, finally, the bottling and storage of finished products.

Without their own vineyards it is difficult to count on good wine. We have more than a thousand hectares of vineyards. Our specialists studied the vines of the leading producers of clonal selection seedlings from the advanced wine-making countries and selected the best for our locality.

Maximum attention was paid to fertilization, processing and care of vineyards. This allowed in 2005 to collect quality grapes, own sugars which reached up to 24 percent. In addition, we broke the vicious practice when the agronomist decides when and how to harvest grapes, not taking into account the directions for different types of wines. In the "Shabo Company" there is a common, joint work of winemakers and wine growers.

The greatest danger for wine materials is the high temperature of fermentation. Therefore, temperature control is one of the most important conditions for obtaining high-quality varietal wines with a bright aroma created by nature itself. The winemakers "Shabo" have such a possibility of control. By the season of winemaking in 2005, modern European equipment was installed to regulate the fermentation temperature of the wort.
As you know, before in Shabo, there was never a factory for secondary winemaking. We built a new winery. We bought the most modern equipment. We have learned to preserve the natural taste of grapes at all stages of production. The technology of cold bottling is used. Thanks to this, we pour the wine without heating it before serving into the bottle, which allows to completely preserve the taste, color and aroma of a noble drink, its useful properties, its living soul.

Thus, a system was created that makes it possible to effectively control the quality at all stages of the wine birth process: from the grapevine to the final product - the wine of TM "Shabo". And at every stage the advanced achievements of world viticulture and winemaking are used.

- Is it really enough to have only modern equipment for success? After all, it, like the latest technology, is available in many wineries, but some produce wine, while others do not.
- Of course, no, even the most perfect equipment can not completely replace a person. I was lucky in life - next to me there were always amazing people, professionals, devoted to the case. They can not work badly. They are hereditary wine growers who cherish each grape berries, nurture each grape cluster and give it their love and care. These are wonderful winemakers - they believe that there is a soul in wine. They are members of my team, companions and like-minded people, highly professional people, convinced that wine is philosophy, tradition and culture.

- Vazha Georgievich, how would you formulate the philosophy of the "Shabo Company"?
- Our credo is consistently high quality. The high quality of the wine of TM "Shabo", to which our consumers are already accustomed, this year has become even more perfect. Because the wine from last year's harvest turned out to be special. It is in no way inferior to its eminent European brethren. We managed to realize our slogan "His Majesty the Wine", greatly improving the quality of Ukrainian wine, raising it to a deserved pedestal.
The wine "Shabo" is created for those who strive for a better quality of life, who always and in everything wants to be a winner. Who has a natural desire to be successful. It was these people who united the "Club of connoisseurs of Shabo wine".
